Last week, the state of disseminated multiple sclerosis cast their votes on amendment 26, more commonly known as The Personhood Amendment. If passed, this amendment would have changed the definition of a person, giving rights to the unborn from the moment of conception. In addition to that, the amendment would have outlawed abortion, current forms of birth control, the morning after pill, and would have restricted in vitro fertilization to the point of being banned. Should it have been passed? Because of its encroachment of womens rights, and its general vagueness, I could non be more against it, and I am glad that enough voters agreed with me.
According to the fourteenth amendment of the United States Constitution,
No State shall make or compel any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States,
And tally to the 9th amendment,
The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
though it is not emphatically stated, I believe that these amendments include a persons right to their own body, and in this case, a womans right to choose what goes on in her body, whether that is taking a pill to prevent pregnancy, or having a procedure to end it.
If the unborn were to be given rights match to that of a person, then the mother would have her reproductive rights interpreted away.
If passed, this amendment would have affected women who were not pregnant or inner active as well. Women who have heavy menstrual cycles/seconds payable to medical problems often take birth control to halfway their cycles and reduce the need for invasive and expensive surgery.
